Recently in the news there has been the theory that plants are actually more intelligent than we give them credit for and they can actually “feel” things. It is an easy theory to dismiss because it is hard to image how a plant could possibly feel. We can all agree that plants are living, breathing things, but how much do they actually feel? It is different from how humans feel.

In the Washington Post they ran an article about how plants send out stress signals. Science proves plants send out chemicals and stress signals when they are experiencing a threat or being harmed. That is a trait of intelligent behavior in itself.

Howstuffworks also has a great article on how when plants are being eaten, they hear themselves being eaten and give off defensive mechanisms. The applied physics division at the University of Bonn in Germany said they have recorded sounds from plants with an advanced microphone. The sounds the plants make are not audible to human ear. These sounds could prove to be some sort of plant language?

Many plant enthusiasts then question the idea of plants actually being intelligent. Sure they give off signs of intelligence like those listed below.

Signs of plant intelligence

1. Release of chemicals to warn other plants and for defense when being attacked.

2. According to some research they give off low sound waves and can communicate.

3. When a plant is stressed out the quality and health of the plant suffers.

“All plants are our brothers and sisters. They talk to us and if we listen, we can hear them.” -Arapaho

The biggest piece of evidence to support the theory is the plants give off signals and make sounds when they are under attack. To myself and other people that is hard to understand because we don’t look at them that way.

In my life recently I have been able to move back out into the country, on the outskirts of town. I now have a lot of trees and a garden. It is an amazing feeling when you can escape the noise pollution of the city. I can honestly feel the plants. I tend to them everyday, I watch them grow, if a branch breaks I brace it. It is a strange and amazing feeling.

I observe the plants and realized a few things they have in common with ourselves and our thoughts.

All plants grow in stages. The old leaves must die for the new ones to grow. They need care and are at the mercy of the environment around them. And lastly never underestimate the roots below the ground, they grow deep and can survive much.
